They crypto bull move continued into the weekend thanks to a trio of positive macro developments.

Likely most responsible for the move was a President Trump Truth Social post regarding trade talks being held in Switzerland between the U.S. and China.

"A very good meeting today," said Trump. "Many things discussed, much agreed to," he continued. "A total reset negotiated in a friendly, but constructive, manner. We want to see, for the good of both China and the U.S., an opening up of China to American business. GREAT PROGRESS MADE!!!"

Earlier Saturday, Trump also announced a "full and immediate" ceasefire in the brewing war between India and Pakistan.

Completing the trio of good news, Russian President Putin said he was "in the mood for serious talks with Ukraine," and suggested talks "without preconditions" in Turkey next week.

Bitcoin (BTC) rose to just a few dollars short of $105,000 before pulling back to the current $104,500, ahead 1.5% over the past 24 hours. Ether (ETH) has continued its recent outperformance, up 7.7% over the same time frame.

Bitcoin Price (BTC) News: $105K in Play

Macro investor and fund manager Dan Tapiero is identifying what could be the catalyst that could fuel a comeback for Bitcoin (BTC) and crypto.

In a new interview on the Milk Road YouTube channel, Tapiero says that monetary policies need to align before digital assets can truly take off.

Tapiero says Fed Chair Jerome Powell is currently “holding back” on policy shifts – but once he acts, the macro investor believes Bitcoin and the broader crypto market will soar.

“[Fiscal tightening] needs to be offset by some sort of monetary offset to keep things in balance [so] the economy doesn’t have too aggressive [of] a pullback in liquidity [and] in demand side drivers. Fiscal policy has been contributing to demand, and now it’s not, and I think monetary policy needs to offset that and the dollar is already sensing that and that’s why it’s weakened…

Ideally, in a perfect world, [Treasury Secretary] Bessent and Trump or whoever should have gone down to Jay Powell and said, ‘Hey guys, we’re going to be undertaking the greatest fiscal tightening of the last 50 years, give us some slack on the monetary side, let’s work together on this…’

But Powell for whatever reason is really holding back here, and I think the next few months the data will confirm that he needs to move and that’ll help Bitcoin and the whole digital asset ecosystem – Ethereum, Solana, the whole world sort of take off again because there is a part of our world that is driven by this liquidity from the old world.”

According to Tapiero, relying on liquidity from traditional finance will be necessary no matter how strong Bitcoin and decentralized finance (DeFi) present themselves and if his conditions are met, BTC could rally close to $200,000.

“Regardless of the good fundamentals that are relating to Bitcoin, regardless of the good fundamentals relating to some of the other projects and the activity in the space, the growth of DeFi, stablecoins, even non-fungible tokens (NFTs) might be coming back a little bit, so I think you just have a little bit of liquidity from the old world come in [and] you have Bitcoin head up to my target, [which] has been $180,000 for a long time.”

BTC is trading for $103,159 at time of writing, a marginal increase on the day.

Here’s What Could Trigger a Comeback for Bitcoin and Crypto, According to Investor Dan Tapiero

A large grocery chain has been exploited by hackers who are now telling the media that the attack is much more serious than what is being admitted.

Co-op Food, one of the largest grocery chains in the UK employing approximately 70,000 people, disclosed last month that it had suffered a cyber-attack from “highly sophisticated” criminals.

Co-op CEO Shirine Khoury-Haq said that “the cyber criminals were able to access a limited amount of member data.”

However, the hackers have since reached out to the BBC and reportedly gave proof that they had breached the company’s IT networks and “stolen huge amounts of customer and employee data.”

Anonymous hackers operating under the name “DragonForce” reportedly showed BBC screenshots from a Microsoft Teams chat where the group told Co-op’s head of cyber security that the company was being extorted.

The screenshots reportedly show the hackers saying,

“Hello, we exfiltrated the data from your company…We have customer database, and Co-op member card data.”

The hack has forced Co-op to begin limiting grocery deliveries to only “essential items” after its electronic data interchange (EDI) system was damaged by the exploit.

In a government press release, Pat McFadden, the UK’s Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said that that “companies must treat cyber security as an absolute priority.”

“These attacks need to be a wake-up call for every business in the UK.

In a world where the cybercriminals targeting us are relentless in their pursuit of profit – with attempts being made every hour of every day – companies must treat cyber security as an absolute priority.

“We’ve watched in real-time the disruption these attacks have caused – including to working families going about their everyday lives. It serves as a powerful reminder that just as you would never leave your car or your house unlocked on your way to work. We have to treat our digital shop fronts the same way.”

Hackers Infiltrate Grocery Giant, Steal ‘Huge Amounts’ of Customer and Employee Data in Extortion Scheme: Report

The US government says a 56-year-old Georgia man used friends, family and an insider to steal over $3 million from a local bank.

Ronnie Atkinson of Macon, Georgia, who owns his own logging company, is accused of conspiring with a high-ranking executive at a community bank through “materially false and fraudulently pretenses, representations, and promises,” local CBS-affiliate 13WMAZ reports.

Prosecutors say Atkinson had friends and relatives act “straw borrowers,” or people with good credit history who apply for loans in order to transfer funds to those who don’t. Those applications were meant to benefit Atkinson, and the high-ranking bank employee was well aware of the scheme but approved the loans anyway, according to the charges.

Atkinson is also accused of giving the bank fake bills for logging equipment he supposedly needed loans for. Some bills were real but with inflated prices, and others were completely fabricated for things that were never even purchased. One of the documents provided was a real bill for $56,000, but Atkinson managed to get a loan of $149,500 for it, prosecutors allege.

Says court documents,

“(The market president) thus let Atkinson exceed his $500,000 lending limit without the proper approvals by making it appear these loans belonged to a different (person)… (The market president) also did not seek the required approval for (Atkinson’s) loans that were graded substandard.”

A grand jury determined there is enough evidence to charge Atkinson with conspiracy to commit bank fraud and identity theft. He is facing up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine. The government is also looking to seize any of his assets that were the result of the fraud.

Man Allegedly Drains $3,000,000 From Bank Using Fraudulent Identities, Friends, Family and an Insider: Report

Billionaire “Bond King” Jeffrey Gundlach says the US will likely witness one crisis this year that would force the Fed to resume a rate-cutting cycle.

In a new CNBC interview, the founder and CEO of investment firm DoubleLine Capital says he sees the Fed cutting rates this year, but it won’t be related to the Fed’s dual mandate of achieving maximum employment and an average of 2% annual inflation.

“I do think they’ll cut rates, but I don’t think it’s going to be because of much better inflation data because I don’t think it’s going to get much better. I doubt the unemployment rate is going to be a shocker in the near term, like in the next few months.

But I do think they’ll cut rates because some liquidity problems may come up. So I do think they’ll probably cut rates by year end, and I still think it’s probably less than the market thinks, but I’m closer to the market now because I’ve stayed at two and the market has gone from five or six down to two and a half [cuts].”

According to Gundlach, some institutions are starting to witness liquidity problems. Gundlach uses Harvard’s recent bond sale to show that US-based entities are in need of cash, but says other institutions are having the same issue.

“The thing that I feel is starting to get talked about, and I think might be significant in the next market problem is this illiquidity issue that [has] developed and it’s getting some play on the newswires with Harvard and some elite universities where they don’t have any money.

They’re asset-rich but they’re cash-poor. Harvard has a $53 billion endowment, and they’ve tapped the bond market now twice for basically operating cash. And the reason is – and I’m just using Harvard as a placeholder because this has been in the news and reported with statistics – they report 40% of their endowment in private equity.

I suspect that another big slug is in private credit, which has been a booming asset class. We’re starting to see stories of some of the faster-moving university endowments saying, ‘We might want to exit some of our commitments…’

I think this is going to be an issue.”

‘Bond King’ Jeffrey Gundlach Names One Catalyst That Could Trigger a Fed Interest Rate Cut This Year

The CEO of the largest digital asset exchange in the US reportedly says Coinbase explored investing most of its cash reserve in Bitcoin (BTC).

Brian Armstrong says that Coinbase previously considered the idea of adopting the same crypto investment strategy taken by Bitcoin bull Michael Saylor, reports Bloomberg.

“There were definitely moments over the last 12 years where we thought, man, should we put 80% of our balance sheet into crypto – into Bitcoin, specifically.”

But Coinbase eventually decided against the idea because it could jeopardize the company’s cash position as a startup and even potentially cause its demise.

“We made a conscious choice about risk.”

Coinbase CFO Alesia Haas supports the move, explaining that the company doesn’t want to appear as though it’s stockpiling Bitcoin in competition with its own customers.

While the crypto exchange abandoned its massive Bitcoin accumulation plan, its latest shareholder letter shows that the firm spent $153 million in Q1 of this year to accumulate digital assets, mostly in Bitcoin. The company now holds $1.3 billion in crypto.

Says Haas,

“Rest assured, we are not stopping there.”

According to Coinbase, it established a huge crypto trove to meet regulatory capital needs, support growing utility and reinforce the firm’s commitment in the digital asset industry.

Brian Armstrong Says Coinbase Considered Putting 80% of Balance Sheet to Crypto, but Decided Against It: Report

The biggest asset manager in the world met with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to discuss several aspects of its crypto market regulation.

According to a new memo, asset management giant BlackRock met with the SEC Crypto Task Force to discuss crypto staking, asset tokenization, the firm’s suite of digital asset products, crypto exchange-traded product (ETP) approval standards, as well as options on crypto ETPs.

“On May 9th, 2025, Crypto Task Force Staff met with representatives from BlackRock, Inc. The topic discussed was approaches to addressing issues related to the regulation of crypto assets.”

The SEC Crypto Task Force, led by Commissioner Hester Peirce, was launched in January 2025 by then Acting Chairman Mark T. Uyeda to create clear crypto guidelines and provide realistic paths to registration.

Earlier this month, BlackRock, which has over $11 trillion under its management, continued its expansion into the world of digital assets as it purchased billions of dollars worth of Bitcoin (BTC), the top crypto asset by market cap.

Data from Bitcoin Treasuries reveals that the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), BlackRock’s BTC-based exchange-traded fund (ETF), currently has 620,252 BTC worth about $64.327 billion.

IBIT, which was launched in January 2024, is currently the largest BTC-based ETF and holds the record for the most successful ETF launch in history.

Bitcoin is trading for $103,213 at time of writing, a marginal increase during the last 24 hours.

Asset Management Giant BlackRock Held Meeting With SEC To Discuss Crypto Staking, Tokenization and More

The biggest bank in the US reportedly says that a recent strategy to bet against emerging market (EM) currencies hasn’t worked out.

Following President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” on April 2nd, JPMorgan Chase provided clients with a trade idea that involved flipping bearish on emerging market currencies, Bloomberg reports.

Say JPMorgan strategists in a note,

“Our UW (underweight) has not worked… We see sufficient arguments that EM FX (foreign exchange) will not weaken versus the USD in the coming period.”

Bloomberg data shows that at least 14 different emerging market currencies have outrun the dollar since April 2nd, with the Taiwanese dollar (TWD) being the strongest performer of all.

Strategists at the bank reportedly anticipated that President Trump’s tariffs would put pressure on foreign markets’ currencies, but failed to see that there would also be a shift away from US assets and therefore a weakening of the dollar.

JPMorgan analysts have since double-upgraded their stance on Asian currencies and have now switched to an overweight positioning from underweight.

And currently, according to Bloomberg, the bank is bullish on the Malaysian ringgit (MYR) while expecting the Chinese Yuan (CNY) to hold steady.

Last month, JPMorgan raised the odds of a global recession from 40% to 60% amid President Trump’s trade war.

Mislav Matejka, the head of global and European equity strategy at JPMorgan, reportedly said investors appear to be overly bullish on US equities despite elevated recession risks and trade uncertainty.

Matejka says that, unlike in the past, US stocks are no longer a “good place to hide in” amid an economic downturn.

JPMorgan Chase Admits Being Caught Offside on Emerging Market Currency Trade Amid US Dollar Weakness: Report

Prosecutors have handed out prison time for eight individuals involved in a wide-ranging conspiracy of wire, bank and mail fraud.

In a press release, the US Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama says that Hunter Hudson, Jr., and seven other people have been sentenced to prison in an elaborate bank fraud scheme that caused an intended loss amount of more than $1.5 million.

The group, which referred to itself in a group chat as the “Fraud Academy,” stole checks, altered them and then deposited them into fraudulent bank accounts, according to prosecutors.

The US Postal Service aided in the investigation, according to the press release.

Says Timothy J. O’Malley, Acting Special Agent in Charge with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI),

“Any attempt to exploit our postal or banking systems is a serious violation of the public’s trust. These actions will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Protecting the integrity of our postal and financial systems is essential and non-negotiable.”

25-year-old Hunter Hudson, the ringleader of the operation, was arrested in May of last year. Local news outlet Fox 13 reported that his rap lyrics gave the investigators material for their probe.

Captain Eric Hill with the Venice Police Department in Florida said that Hudson “drove around throughout the whole region of the United States and he would steal mail.”

“He would wash those checks or use the account information on those checks to then make fraudulent deposits into other individuals’ accounts who would agree to be part of this scam with them.”

Hudson was sentenced to 92 months in prison and was ordered to pay $987,883.50 in restitution and to forfeit $91,020.41.

Eight Arrested in Multi-State Bank Fraud Conspiracy That Caused Over $1,500,000 in Losses: DOJ

A crypto analyst who nailed Bitcoin’s pre-halving correction last year believes that the final stages of the BTC bull market are underway.

Pseudonymous analyst Rekt Capital tells his 546,700 followers on the social media platform X that a new Bitcoin four-year cycle has begun.

The analyst says that year one of a new cycle typically sends Bitcoin to levels never seen before.

“2025 will be the year of the BTC Bull Market peak.

2026 will be the year of the Bitcoin Bear Market.

And 2027 will be the Bottoming Out year to precede an entirely brand new future Bull Market.”

Rekt says that Bitcoin tends to print the steepest rallies of its bull market after entering a fresh four-year cycle.

“It’s 2025, the year of the BTC Parabolic rally into a new Bull Market peak.

This phase of the cycle only comes around once every four years.

This could very well be one of the most defining years of your life, if you play it right.”

Zooming in on BTC, Rekt shares a chart suggesting that BTC will initially climb to around $150,000 before witnessing another consolidation and igniting a final leg up en route to $200,000.

“This Bitcoin cycle has been a story of Re-Accumulation Ranges.

But also Downside Deviations from these Ranges.

This will probably continue.”

At time of writing, Bitcoin is trading for $103,690.

Crypto Analyst Says 2025 Will Be the Year Bitcoin Hits Bull Market Peak, Unveils Upside Price Targets for BTC

Billionaire Chamath Palihapitiya is warning that one metric suggests that the financial health of American consumers is deteriorating.

In a new episode of the All-In Podcast, Palihapitiya says he’s keeping a close watch on the price-to-book ratios of subprime lenders Capital One and Credit Acceptance.

Investors use the price-to-book ratio to evaluate whether asset-heavy firms like banks are undervalued or overvalued.

But the billionaire venture capitalist notes that the financial metric can also be used as an early warning signal for a potential liquidity crisis in the US.

“What it shows you is the spread where Credit Acceptance is versus Capital One. And the point in bringing this up is that when you look back historically around these subprime lenders, whenever these guys start to see price to books just start to escalate and get to highs, it tends to portend a liquidity crisis. It tends to show that things are about to roll over.

And from that perspective, I think there are some blinking yellow lights that the Fed needs to take seriously.”

The billionaire also says that the Fed can get ahead of a potential liquidity crisis by abruptly cutting rates.

“Some of the most critical leading indicators, particularly around liquidity and the credit health of the American consumer are blinking yellow. So right now, they are choosing to ignore these historically useful leading indicators.”

Last week, the Federal Reserve decided to keep interest rates steady at 4.25% to 4.5%, citing its dual mandate of achieving maximum employment and inflation at 2% over the long run.

Billionaire Chamath Palihapitiya Warns One Metric Hinting US Liquidity Crisis, Says Credit Health of Americans Blinking Yellow

A telecom giant is offering 25 million people free SIM cards after a massive hack left its customers’ sensitive personal information at risk.

SK Telecom, the largest mobile provider in South Korea, acknowledged in a security notice that its customers’ personal data was exposed during a malware attack on the company.

The company said in an announcement last month that “no cases of misuse of the information have been confirmed to date.” However, local publication Korea JoongAng Daily is reporting that some of SK Telecom’s customers have discovered money stolen from their bank accounts after the hacking incident.

Police reportedly said that three days after the hack, a man had learned that his mobile plan with SK Telecom had suddenly been cancelled, and he was told by company employees at a service center that someone had signed up for a budget plan with another provider using his name.

Soon thereafter, the man discovered that 50 million Korean won – about $34,000 – had been stolen from his bank account by unknown people in five separate transactions. He then called the police and asked his bank to freeze his account.

Victims of the hack have formed an organization seeking collective action against SK Telecom, and are demanding a full investigation into the attack.

The group, dubbed the “SKT USIM Hacking Joint Response,” told Korea JoongAng Daily that they believe the worse is still yet to come from the data breach, and that the telecom giant’s reaction to the mishap has been underwhelming.

“The leaked information could lead to serious secondary damage across financial, social networking and other services that rely on mobile phone number authentication… SK Telecom’s response has been extremely insufficient.

The scope and extent of the damage have not been clearly revealed, which has amplified user anxiety and confusion.”

SK Telecom subsequently offered free SIM cards for all 25 million customers.

However, the company now says it’s only able to get ahold of 6 million SIM cards for the entire month of May, meaning that it will take some time for it to follow through on its compensation plan.

Says the company in an update,

“[SK Telecom] currently has 1 million SIMs and plans to secure 5 million more SIMs by the end of May. However, since many customers are coming at once and waiting times are expected to be long, please check in advance through the online reservation application system.”
