An under-the-radar altcoin witnessed a mild jump in price on Thursday after the venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) announced it was investing $55 million in the token.

Ali Yahya, a general partner at a16z crypto, announced the investment in ZRO, the native token of the omnichain interoperability protocol LayerZero.

LayerZero aims to move data across blockchains and support “censorship-resistant messages and permissionless development through immutable smart contracts.” Yahya notes the a16z investment has a three-year lockup.

Interoperability Protocol Asset Surges After a16z Acquires $55,000,000 Worth of the Project’s Native Asset

Bank of America is set to pay more than half a billion dollars after a district judge found the lender massively underpaid its deposit insurance fees for more than a year.

In 2017, the FDIC filed a lawsuit against BofA for allegedly failing to pay $1.12 billion in mandatory fees between Q2 of 2013 and Q4 of 2014.

The FDIC also accused BofA of unjustly enriching itself by keeping the money.

According to the lawsuit, BofA failed to accurately report its counterparty exposures, leading to lower risk scores and lower insurance payments.

“In 2016, an FDIC audit revealed that ‘[BofA] had not consolidated its counterparty exposures to the ultimate parent level as required…’ This lowered [BofA’s] concentration measure, which in turn considerably lowered the overall amount that BANA paid in assessments for those quarters.”

BofA argues that it correctly interpreted regulations that were created after the 2008 financial crisis to strengthen the stability of the banking system and enhance risk-based deposit insurance assessments.

The bank also claims it lacked fair notice of the FDIC’s interpretation of the rule, calling the rule itself “arbitrary and capricious and procedurally flawed.”

US District Judge Loren L. Alikhan rejected most of BofA’s arguments while cutting the claim in half.

According to Alikhan, the rule is valid and that the FDIC was right to go after BofA’s underpaid deposit insurance fees. However, the judge says BofA has to pay over $540.26 million plus interest instead of the $1.12 billion sought by the regulator.

“The court agrees with the FDIC that, after reading the text of the 2011 Rule and ‘acting in good faith,’ [BofA] should have been able to ‘identify[] with ascertainable certainty, the standards’ it was expected to apply.”

Bank of America Ordered To Pay $540,261,499 for Massive Underpayment of Deposit Insurance Fees

The leaders of a Brazilian crypto Ponzi scheme have reportedly been handed a combined sentence of over 170 years behind bars.

According to a new report, the three leaders of Braiscompany, which perpetrated the scheme, were sentenced for defrauding investors out of nearly $190 million, or $1.1 billion Brazilian Reals.

The report says the company’s main operator, Joel Ferreira de Souza, was handed a sentence of 128 years behind bars, while the other two perpetrators, Gesana Rayane Silva and Victor Augusto Veronez de Souza, were given sentences of 28 and 15 years, respectively.

According to authorities, the trio promised “exorbitant” returns on the crypto investments of their victims in order to initially get their funds and engaged in money laundering.

Ferreira de Souza was found to be controlling crypto portfolios through third parties, as well as using shell companies to facilitate his crimes. He was convicted of 11 counts of money laundering, while Reyane Silva, the firm’s broker, was found responsible for intermediating financial transactions and transporting funds. De Souza, Joel’s son, was also found guilty of being involved with one of the companies involved in the illegal transactions.

The judge in the case said that proceeds from the scam should go directly to the government. However, Artêmio Picanço – the lawyer representing the victims of Braiscompany – argued on one of his social media accounts that the fund should go directly to the victims.

In a new video update, Guy Turner, the host of Coin Bureau, tells his 2.66 million YouTube subscribers that the markets are still way too bullish for traders to be thinking about a bear market starting anytime soon, despite the industry taking a “pounding” recently.

According to Turner, we’re still very much in Bitcoin (BTC) season as BTC dominance is still on the rise. He notes that when it comes time to flip to altcoin season, which appears to be coming soon, the top 10 altcoins by market cap will likely see the most inflows.

In our opinion, the altcoins that will see the most investment will likely be those in the top 10 by market cap, although this also means that the potential gains will be significantly lower.”

The crypto king is trading for $84,542 at time of writing, a fractional increase on the day, while its dominance level currently sits at 63.9%.

Turner goes on to say the regulatory turnaround by the US on digital assets will also greatly bolster the industry, both in retail and institutional trading, so traders shouldn’t think about giving up yet.

“Crypto regulators in the US have become much friendlier to the industry thanks to the pro-crypto stance taken by the Trump administration…

We believe that this will help to attract a broad range of investors to the crypto market over time, be they retail or institutional investors, and this is also why we believe that although the market has been taking an absolute pounding lately, we shouldn’t be tapping out just yet…

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has greenlit a new crypto-related exchange-traded fund (ETF) from the financial giant VanEck.

Matthew Sigel, VanEck’s head of digital assets research, will manage the new “Onchain Economy ETF,” which he says will hold 30-60 stocks tied to the crypto sector.

Those stocks will include miners, exchanges, data centers, energy infrastructure providers, hardware firms, traditional finance rails, gaming firms and asset managers, among other crypto-adjacent investments.

The ETF will also allocate up to 25% of its portfolio toward crypto asset exchange-traded funds.

Sigel says the ETF will use the ticker NODE and aims to launch by May 14th.

“The global economy is shifting to a digital foundation. NODE offers active equity exposure to the real businesses building that future.”

The SEC greenlit the first spot market Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024, bringing in billions of dollars worth of inflows to the top digital asset by market cap, and the regulator subsequently approved Ethereum ETFs for trading last July. Two financial firms, Franklin Templeton and Hashdex, also launched joint BTC-ETH ETFs earlier this year.

On Deribit, traders are actively chasing calls at the 90k to $100k strikes expiring in May and June, the exchange said in a market update Thursday. The demand for calls indicates expectations for a continued price rally.

Some of these bullish bets have been funded by premiums collected by selling put options.

At the same time, there has been renewed interest in buying put options at $80k expiring this month, representing preparations for potential price declines. Buying a put option is akin to purchasing insurance against price slides.

The diverse two-way flow comes as the VIX, Wall Street’s fear gauge measuring the 30-day implied volatility, still remains well above its 50-day average, despite the pullback from recent highs above 50.

The VIX is warning that the macro situation is still unraveling rather than resolving, the exchange said on X.
